Pastor's Piece - The Changing of the Guard
Apart from an article from Pastor Rick Ferret in the pilot edition, and one from Pastor George Porter in the first edition, all articles from the Pastor have come from Dr Barry Wright. Now we come to a change as he has retired and Ms Sue Redman has been appointed as our new Pastor.
Sue had a series of speaking appointments out of Sydney early in January, and was then on annual leave, so for this month the editor is writing the Pastor's Piece as an introduction to our new Pastor.
Although she was born in South-East Queensland near Kingaroy, Sue grew up in North New South Wales at Narrabri and did all bar one year of her schooling there. She grew up in an Adventist home and her brother, Neil Redman, is now Assistant Youth Director in the Victorian Conference.
After completion of her HSC, Sue attended Avondale College (the Seventh-day Adventist tertiary institution north of Sydney) where she enrolled in the Theology course. She graduated with a BA (Theology) degree in 1998.
Sue's first service post was as a ministerial assistant in a large New Zealand Seventh-day Adventist church at Papatoetoe. After a couple of years there she was transferred back to Australia nearer to her home in the Murwillumbah Church. For the past six years she has been in Sydney with full responsibility for the Adventist church at Chatswood. The church there currently has a large number of families with young children in contrast to the situation here where older folk predominate.
When asked about personal interests Sue listed music and sport and food. She plays the piano, is learning the guitar and likes to sing. She also plays tennis, basketball and table tennis, and likes to swim and walk. She enjoys cooking, hosting dinner parties and eating out.
As far as church goals are concerned, Sue's ultimate vision is to inspire people to surrender their all to Jesus so they truly live as He lived both as individuals and as a church. She believes Jesus Christ came to this earth not only to restore our relationships with God but also with each other, and in this sense believes the church is the ultimate goal of salvation and should be the ultimate reflection of heaven.
As such Sue doesn't want anyone to miss out on being part of a church family and is therefore passionate about sharing Thornleigh Church with the extended Thornleigh and surrounding suburbs community. She wants this church to be a place where both we and our extended community belong and will be depending on Jesus as to how we can do this more effectively.
