My Cup Runneth Over

21 Oct 2000, Pr Alex Currie

(Alex is Assistant to the President for the South Pacific Division of the Seventh-day Adventist Church)

Introductory Poem:

I've never made a fortune
and it's probably too late now.
But I don't worry about much,
I'm happy anyhow
And as I go along life's journey,
I'm reaping better than I sowed
And I'm drinking from my saucer
because my cup is overflowed.

Don't have a lot of riches
and sometimes the going's tough,
But I have family and friends
that love me and make me rich enough.
I just thank God for his blessings
and mercies He's bestowed.
I'm drinking from my saucer
because my cup is overflowed.

Oh, I remember times when things went wrong
and my faith got a little thin.
But then all at once the dark clouds broke
and that old sun peeped through again.
So Lord help me not to gripe
about the tough rows I've hoed.
I'm drinking from my saucer
because my cup has overflowed.

And if God gives me strength
and courage when the way is steep and rough,
I'll not ask for other blessings,
I'm already blessed enough.
And may I never be too busy
to help another bear his load.
Then I'll keep drinking from my saucer
because my cup has overflowed.

Note from the Webmaster:

The theme of this week's sermon was based on the above Poem - I'm drinking from my saucer because my cup is overflowed - to illustrate how God lavishes us with his care and protection, and guides us through life.  Most of the sermon consisted of illustrations of this in story form, given in an adhoc manner - and therefore do not translate to a written document such as this.  Be that as it may, what follows are a few thoughts from the sermon.

An annoted version of Psalm 23:

The Lord is my shepherd:  I shall not want,
      (Therefore I shall lack nothing.)
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures;
      (Therefore I shall not lack provision.)
He leadeth me beside the still waters
      (So I shall not lack peace.)
He restoreth my soul;
      (So I shall not lack restoration if I faint or fail)
He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his names sake
      (So I shall never lack guidance.)
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil: for thou art with me;
      (I shall not lack courage in the dark hour.)
Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me,
      (So I shall not lack true comfort.)
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;
      (I shall not lack protection, preservation, and honour.)
Thou anointest my head with oil;
      (I shall never lack joy of which oil is a symbol.)
my cup runneth over,
      (I shall never lack the fulness of blessings in my life)
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;
      (I shall not lack Divine favour as long as I live.)
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
      (I shall not lack a heavenly home when my Lord calls me.)

What is the key point of Psalm 23?

God is love, He is loyal and will never let us go.

This loyal-love of God unfolds in three stages:
