Messiah and Song

Messiah and Song - We have something to sing about as Christians

When I was at university an unbelieving friend of mine asked if I'd like to go with him and see a performance of Handel's Messiah at the Opera House. I happily agreed. I knew next to nothing about Handel or his Messiah, but I figured it might be a fun night out and, after all, a bit of culture wouldn't do me any harm.

We took a seat in a stall just above the orchestra and as the program unfolded I was blown away by the majesty and power of the performance. The soloists sang magnificently. The choir was resonant and tight as each chorister sang with unquestioned passion. The orchestra was magnificent. And the music… Handel's Messiah… well what a revelation. Where had this been all my life? I was won over to the passion and power of the oratorio.

But most moving of all was the fact that here in Sydney's Opera House, in what was essentially a secular venue listening to a secular performance, having been invited by my non-Christian friend, I was hearing, unmistakably, the song of the gospel, the story of the Jesus I loved; and best of all my friend was hearing it too.

If music can be such a powerful force to commend the gospel and stir my heart with love for Jesus at the Opera House, how much more should it be a soul stirring experience when we lift our voices together in sincerity and truth, and sing the glories of our mighty God in church? We've got something to sing about.
